Following the councils rejection of the Raera wind farm it is worth studying the presentation by Scottish Natural Heritage particularly:-
PROGRESS TOWARDS MEETING THE SCOTTISH GOVERNMENT’S RENEWABLES ENERGY TARGET.
The amount of installed capacity required across Scotland to meet the 80% 2020 Scottish Government target is 13Gwatts. There are currently 6Gwatts either consented or installed.
There are a further 11Gwatts in the planning systems across the Nation for onshore renewables and a further 12Gwatt in offshore proposals (23Gwatts).
Not all of this 23Gwatt will gain planning permission but if 30% (7 Gwatts) or more of it does then the target will be met.
As such, in order to meet Scotland’s targets there is no need to install onshore wind farms in valued sensitive landscapes such as those which surround Raera.
In view of the above, the proposed Clachan wind farm is obviously an unnecessary industrial development: it would overpower the landscape in a designated area of panoramic quality; be local to the Firth of Lorn special area of conservation, and; would be seen from as far away as Mull and other islands.
